Aluminum Shavings/Turnings [Telic]

  • Description
    • Aluminum Shavings/Turnings are generated from the use of metalworking machinery such as lathes and touret mills. Various aluminum series, such as 2000, 6000, and 7000, may be generated depending on the facility. There are two types of salable products: High-Grade Telic and Mixed Telic; these definitions vary by buyer. It is very important to visit the source and educate them on sorting this material to maximize the value.
    • Excess moisture from cutting fluid will lead to downgrades and rejections, so ensuring the turnings are dry before shipping is essential. To make certain steel turnings are not mixed in, run a magnet across this material from time to time.
  • Upgrade potential
    • Segregated alloy turnings can be worth more than HG Turnings; however, this is not always the case as the market conditions are constantly changing. As an example, 6000 turnings may be an upgrade, and 5000 series turnings may be undesirable.
    • You may find large chunks of aluminum mixed in with the turnings to upgrade as New Aluminum [Tough/Taboo] or 6061.
  • ISRI definition
